EA say in their Patent Pledge For Increasing Accessibility that they promise “not to enforce against any party for infringing any of the listed EA patents.” They’re starting with five patents, and say they may expand the pledge to include more later. One patent is for a “contextually aware communications system”, which EA manifested in the Apex Legends ping system to easily call out items, enemies, locations, and such. That’s a handy feature even for people who don’t have accessibility needs....

The Age Of Empires 4 technical stress test will start at 6pm (10am Pacific) on Friday the 17th and run until 6pm (10am Pacific) on Monday the 20th. It’ll be on both Steam and the Xbox Insider Hub app. It’ll offer the tutorial, Mission Zero, as well as the option to play custom multiplayer matches against AI opponents but the test’s focus is proper meatbag vs. meatbag multiplayer. It’s an ambitious plan, too: Steam games, of which there are tens of thousands, will be manually reviewed by Valve themselves, and assigned to a category denoting how well they work on the Steam Deck. This reviewing process will focus on four key attributes: input support, native display resolution support (with readable text), general hardware compatibility and compatibility with Proton, including middleware like anti-cheat. Games that meet all these criteria will find themselves in the ‘Verified’ category, whereas some will enter the ‘Playable’ category if they mostly work outside of needing some settings changes on the user’s part....

Expeditions are missions Fallout 76 players can take on (and repeat if you ’em) that will let you visit other areas of the wasteland. I probably played Fallout 76 more than most of you. Alongside my BFF, Tom, I set up shop on Whitespring golf course and spent my evenings cursing mirelurks, worshipping owl gods, and hunting down cat paintings for my base. The Wastelanders update has me reinstalling Fallout 76 for a number of reasons. I’m eager to see if the new missions it brings are better than the previous pile. A few of the story lines in 76 outstayed their welcome (Rose’s fetch quests took way too long to do), so more things to do are always welcome....

With their first ‘Xbox 20/20’ stream on Thursday, Microsoft say they “will focus on giving you a first look at next-gen gameplay, trailers and sneak peeks from a wide variety of publishing partners and independent developers across the globe and industry, including Ubisoft’s recently announced Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and hear from game creators about what they’re doing with their games on Xbox Series X.” Ubisoft confirmed that the first Valhalla “gameplay trailer” is what will be shown....

I love Grand Designs. I can’t help it. There is something soothing about watching people with more money than sense trying to build a mansion fit for the Hollywood Hills half underground in North London, forced to come to terms with the limits of their own ambition. Kevin McCloud bears witness to crumbling foundations, wrecked marriages, and the declaration of bankruptcies. Above all else, Grand Designs is a grand display of perseverance....

2016’s game was the first Forza Horizon to come to PC. Once again, it spread a big racing festival across an open world, in this case a condensed chunk of mock-Australia. It’s Forza Horizon, y’know, except without a battle royale mode because 2016 was a long time ago. Long enough that Microsoft are looking to put the game into assisted living. Yesterday the devs announced Forza Horizon 3 will soon reach “End of Life” status, which sounds ominous but mostly means they’re hiding it away from the world so no one new comes into its life and those who are there will slowly leave....

In today’s announcement, Playground Games say that Forza Horizon 4 will arrive on steam on March 9th. They add that the game will also include cross-platform multiplayer between racers on PC (whether via Steam or the Microsoft Store), Xbox, and Android devices. Horizon 4 was one of RPS’s best PC games on 2020, in which we call it one of the best racing games in years. “Forza Horizon 4 plops you into a bucolic montage of British countryside and towns during a nation-consuming racing festival,” says the hivemind....
