In NieR: Automata you play as these androids who have these levitating weapons strapped to their backs. Two of them are blindfolded, the other isn’t. Knee high leather boots are in vogue, as is a soundtrack with lots of operatic “oooos” and “aaaas”. Beware the mackerel; it’ll end your game early. I just get the feeling NieR’s still a bit slept on. I’m particularly pleased to see the return of its soothing radio station, which was one of my favourite parts of Golf Club Wasteland when I reviewed it last year - or at least that’s the impression I get from the trailer’s narration. The horror starts off with you finding yourself in the deserted streets of a vaguely Victorian town, where the few remaining locals cower behind their doors. It turns out everybody’s been lured in t’ pit by a mysterious acolyte known as the Alderman, and you’re the only one wizard enough to stop him....

It sounds as if the basic structure is following the traditions of Jagged Alliance 2. It’s set on an island and you can choose which region you wish to tackle next, an you’ll be balancing turn-based battles alongside the meta-layer of reinforcing regions and dealing with responsive enemies....
That trailer to celebrate its imminent early access exit was surprising, and you can’t tell me otherwise. The game has picked up a lot of additions on its trip to release, turning Doom’s run-and-gun carnage into a slow and steady turn-based stalk through the facility. It’s a place where you have to check every corner, examine every weapon, and even search through an enemy’s viscera for character boosting relics. Perks let you define a character with weapon and armour customisation, adding things like auto-reloads every turn, better tracking, and even stealth....
There’s also the Edgerunner update dropping today, a tie-in for the Netflix anime Edgrunners (more info on that was also revealed tonight), and free-to-play mini game featuring Roach the horse, because we all like Roach the horse. Phantom Liberty, which sounds like a joke name I’d make up if I were inventing a fake Kojima game, seems to involve V making some kind of deal with the President. At least I think it’s the President, and I think that’s her in the header image....
