It’s a condensed version; where you can sprint across the map in under ten minutes and iconic districts bleed into each other without needing to stuff into the metro to take them all in. You wouldn’t get far if you did - like everything else, the trains sit abandoned, festooned with the clothes of punters vanished by the game’s opening spectral blast....

Nervous Ron Jakowski is the conspiracy theorist best friend of one of GTA 5’s protagonists, Trevor, and who bears a slight resemblance to real-world gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Ron’s appeared in GTA Online a few times before, back when the game launched in 2013 and for the Smuggler’s Run update in 2017. The opening chapter of the two-part Los Santos Drug Wars update teams you up with Ron and his crew in Blaine County, who Rockstar call “out-of-state misfits on a mission to put their stamp on the Los Santos psychedelics trade”....

GTFO is an early access tactical FPS horror, where up to four players descend into some creepy creature-infested labs to grab items and info before attempting to escape. It’s made by 10 Chambers Collective, a studio created by ex-Payday developers, and it’s really very good. Matt said last year that “it’s the best way to panic as a group since Killing Floor.” In my experience that certainly rings true, and it looks like we’re in for even more panicking with the freaky new stuff in this update....

Speedrunner Maxam1337 isn’t one for timewasting. In his latest, world-record-setting Half-Life speedrun, The Swedish runner puts a four-minute period of exposition (starting below at the 1:30 mark) to good use - tabbing out of Half-Life to practice strategies for 1997’s Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Once the scientists back in Black Mesa have had their fun, Maxam tabs back in to start his speedrun in earnest. Freeman, preferring theoretical physics to Jedi mind tricks, won’t pick up a lightsaber again for the rest of the run....

The tools are based on the Halo Editing Kit from the original 2003 release of Combat Evolved, so people familiar with that can start modding and porting content. There are a number of programs folded into the package. ‘Guerilla’ lets you edit all the values or tags in the game, meaning you can change colours, weapon values, even what trees spawn in certain levels. ‘Sapien’ is where you take all these tweaked terrors and place them in the level....

So that’s a story campaign with co-op support, competitive multiplayer modes, and the Theater replay viewer/editor (also now in Halo: Reach). Halo 2’s Forge editor is not ready yet, though. If you want ye olde Halo 2’s looks, the campaign does let you switch between the old and new looks with the press of a button, mind. Halo 2: Anniversary is out now on Steam and the Microsoft Store. It costs £7/€10/$10 by itself, or it’s a bit cheaper as part of the £30 Master Chief Collection which will have all the games up to Halo 4, as and when they’re done....

Backed by a sumptuous score composed by David ‘Rime’ Garcia, Arise shares a surprising amount of DNA with Tequila Works’ sun-bleached adventure puzzler, so much so that it’s hard not to see one as an extension of the other. Both feature protagonists coming to terms with their past and both of them give you the power to scroll through the heavens with a nudge of an analogue stick in order to fast forward and turn back time....

To my eyes, at least, they wanted to stick Far Cry’s survival of the fittest hunting and gathering in a game where it made sense. There are still outposts to tackle and weapons to unlock, but given that this is set in 10,000 B.C. and you play a caveman (and not a terrible American 20-something that’s on holiday with his pals), how you deal with the dangerous animals of this world fits more naturally with the story....

Much like we have offices to work in, Paunch provides an arena to settle things in, like arguments and such. This is a game that really takes fighting seriously and it whisks you to the mountainous, frigid highlands to have it out. Just as Bob’s rippling muscles and fleshy tone contrasts quite beautifully with the greenery, so does the sound of a boulder whistling through the air and clattering into a skull....

Serrated Scalpel was developed by Mythos Software and published by EA in 1992. It lets you delve into a murder investigation surrounded by the familiar cast of Holmes stories. You wind up Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard, consult with street urchin Wiggins and his band of Baker Street Irregulars, and partner up with a decidedly un-creepy Watson. The game starts out at a theatre in Mayfair, but you get to scoot all over London, even ending up down the pub at one point....

For one thing, AoD attempted to introduce several features that are pretty standard in action-adventure titles today, but were still quite innovative at the time — including allowing Lara to explore areas populated by interactable, non-hostile NPCs rather than enemies who existed solely for her to shoot at. This expanded world opened up so many new avenues, including what even nay-sayers will admit was the best narrative and dialogue of any Tomb Raider game up to that point....

I’m not big on ARPGs. I like the idea of them, and I almost always enjoy the first few hours of each game I come across, but I never stick with them. It’s a slow defeat, starting with a day or two away from the game, and ending with the realisation that I’m not comfortable diving back into wherever I was when I last quit, and I have little desire to start a new run....

Death Knights are a new class for Hearthstone arriving with March Of The Lich King in December, but they’re sticking around permanently. A Death Knight’s ghoul charge ability lets them command the undead. By spending two mana, you can summon a ghoul with the charge that dies at the end of the turn. Whenever one of your deceased minions becomes deceased again you’ll gain a corpse – delightful – that can be spent to power up other cards....

This was a bit of a vague reason that naturally left a lot of fans asking questions - but now they’ve said they can’t justify upgrading the tech on platforms that house less than 0.3% of their active player base.
